Family Carabidae

            Tribe Platynini

 Platynus (Batenus) angustatus  Dejean

Description and Taxonomy

Length 11.5-16mm. This large, dark-piceous Platynus species with elongate forebody and appendages is unmistakable. Besides its distinctive habitus the species differs from other Platynus species by possessing completely rounded hind angles of the pronotum, narrow, obliterated humeri and strongly flattened elytra (Lindroth 1966). This species is also characterized by a presence of two dark rufous spots on the frons, ventrally setose last metatarsomeres and presence of dorsoapical setae on the metafemurs (Liebherr and Will 1996). In the Nearctic Region, the genus is represented by 22 species, six of them inhabiting the Smokies (Ball and Bousquet 2001).

Life History

The species is brachypterous, moderately hygrophilous and prefers stony areas in coniferous forests. Adults can be found beneath rocks and under logs in rocky places at middle altitudes (1200m) and up.  Specimens from GSMNP were collected during June-September. At Clingmans Dome the species was taken in company with the ground beetle Pterostichus lachrymosus.

Distribution

The species is distributed over all the Appalachian region and adjoining areas from New York and Indiana in the north to northern Georgia and Alabama in the south (Bousquet and Larochelle 1993). The species is known from many localities in GSMNP.
